August is peak hose season across Idaho Falls, Ammon, Rexburg, and Pocatello — gardens, car washing, kids filling splash pads. It is also when outdoor faucet problems show up: a drip at the spigot, water weeping where the sillcock meets the siding, or a sudden spray when you turn the handle. Some of those leaks started as freeze damage last winter and only appear when you use the bib again. Others are summer wear. Either way, ignoring them wastes water and can soak the wall cavity behind the faucet.

Common outdoor faucet problems in summer

  • Drip at the spout when the handle is closed — usually a worn washer, packing nut, or cartridge inside the sillcock.
  • Leak at the handle — packing or stem seals failing from hard-water scale and frequent use.
  • Water behind the siding or in the crawl space — a frost-free sillcock that cracked inside the wall during winter, or a failed solder/joint on the supply stub-out.
  • Hose left attached overnight — traps water in the sillcock so a freeze later (or even a cold night in the Tetons) can split the valve; in summer it also keeps pressure on seals that are already tired.

Frost-free sillcock vs. standard hose bib

A standard hose bib shuts water off right at the exterior wall. A frost-free sillcock closes the valve deeper inside the heated part of the house so the outdoor pipe drains dry. Most East Idaho installs after a freeze failure use frost-free. If yours still drips from the outdoor spout after you shut it off, the internal seat may be worn — a plumber can often rebuild or replace the sillcock without opening the whole wall, depending on access and brand.

What you can try before requesting service

  • Disconnect the hose when you are done watering — every time.
  • If the drip is at the packing nut under the handle, a slight snug (not a gorilla twist) sometimes slows it.
  • Shut off the indoor valve that feeds the outdoor faucet (if you have one) to stop a bad leak until help arrives.
  • Do not keep using a bib that sprays from the wall or fills the crawl space — that is an active leak path.

When to request a plumber

Request faucet and fixture repair if the leak is inside the wall, the sillcock will not shut off, or you need a frost-free replacement. If water is actively flooding a crawl space or finished wall, treat it as emergency plumbing — shut the main if needed, then submit an urgent request.
