Heat makes sewer odors worse — or at least harder to ignore. In July and August, homeowners from Idaho Falls to Rexburg notice a rotten-egg or sewage smell in a bathroom, basement, or yard. Sometimes it is a simple dry trap. Sometimes it is a vent or lateral problem that needs a plumber and a camera.

Common summer causes

Dry P-traps

Floor drains in basements, utility rooms, and rarely used showers rely on water in the P-trap to block sewer gas. In hot, dry weather that water evaporates faster. A guest bath that sits unused while you travel can dry out too. Pour a quart of water into unused drains every few weeks — or a cup of mineral oil on top of the water to slow evaporation.

Plumbing vents and roof stacks

Vents equalize pressure so traps do not get siphoned dry. A blocked vent (debris, nest, or ice damage leftovers) can pull traps dry when fixtures drain. Hot weather does not create the blockage, but heavy use during gatherings can make the symptom obvious.

Yard or cleanout odors

A smell outdoors near the sewer cleanout or a soggy strip of lawn can mean a leaking or partially blocked lateral — heat intensifies the odor. Multiple slow drains or gurgling toilets point the same way. See sewer line problems and tree roots and consider a camera inspection.

Water heater anode or sulfur smell

A rotten-egg smell mainly in hot water can be anode-related or bacterial activity in the tank — different from sewer gas at a drain. Mention whether the smell is hot-only when you request service so the plumber brings the right checks.

Quick checks before you request help

  • Run water in unused fixtures and floor drains.
  • Note whether the smell is one room, the whole house, or outside.
  • Check if drains are also slow or gurgling.
  • If anyone feels dizzy or sick and you suspect gas (not just sewer odor), leave and follow utility/emergency guidance — sewer gas and natural gas are different problems.
